📌 Eyes – Minimalist Watch
Program: HKDI Watch Design Competition | Year: 2013
Brief Description:
A conceptual minimalist watch design inspired by the idea of dual perspectives. The time is displayed using two concentric rotating circles, resembling a pair of "eyes" to represent hour and minute hands in motion.
Design Challenge:
Reimagine how users perceive time by designing a poetic, wearable timepiece that balances visual storytelling with practical function.
Design Solution:
Created a clean, minimalist watch face with two subtle rotating disks to replace traditional hands. The design tells time through movement and visual metaphor, appealing to users who appreciate conceptual aesthetics.
My Role:
- Developed the concept and product story
- Created sketches and 3D visualizations
- Designed the final renderings and layout for competition submission
- Presented the concept through visuals and written narrative
Reflection:
✔ Successfully told a visual story through form and movement
❗ Could have gathered more user feedback to evaluate legibility and everyday usability
🎓 Learned how to push boundaries in watch design while maintaining minimalist appeal
Visuals:
- 3D renders showing watch face and side profile
- User interaction scenarios and wrist mockups
- Concept sketches and visual storyboards

📌 Watch Design (Hong Kong Watch Design Competitions) School: HKDI | Year: Final Year
Brief Description: This project involved designing a concept watch for Hong Kong’s prestigious watch design competition, blending modern and classic elements to create a timeless design.
Design Challenge: The challenge was to design a watch that was not only visually appealing but also functional and durable, incorporating traditional watchmaking craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.
Design Solution: The watch featured a clean and minimalist dial, with a durable stainless-steel case and a unique leather strap. The design was inspired by classic watchmaking techniques while introducing modern elements like a more accessible clasp system.
My Role: - Conceptualizing the watch design, including case and dial layout - Material research and selection for durability and comfort - Prototyping and testing for accuracy and user comfort
Reflection: ✔ I was able to create a design that balanced modern aesthetics with traditional watchmaking elements. The watch was well-received for its simplicity and elegance. ❗ More exploration into sustainable materials could have been incorporated into the design. 🎓 This project taught me the intricacies of designing timepieces and the importance of balancing craftsmanship with functionality.
Visuals: - Design sketches and illustrations of the watch face and strap - 3D renders of the watch from various perspectives - Prototype photos of the final concept
Brief Description: A fashion-forward watch concept inspired by the theatrical and avant-garde essence of Alexander McQueen. The watch merges gothic luxury with emotional storytelling.
Design Challenge: Translate McQueen’s fashion philosophy—dark beauty, drama, and storytelling—into a wearable timepiece that captures attention and provokes emotion.
Design Solution: The design features bold sculptural lines and intricate detailing, resembling gothic lace or armor. Materials like matte black metal and blood-red accents symbolize contrast and emotion.
My Role: - Led creative direction and conceptual storytelling - Sketched and refined the design language inspired by haute couture - Rendered final visuals for competition submission - Crafted a visual moodboard to align fashion and watchmaking
Reflection: ✔ Successfully captured the essence of fashion-driven watch design ❗ Needed more focus on production feasibility and cost considerations 🎓 Learned how to bring fashion narratives into product design through form and detail
Visuals: - Fashion-inspired concept sketches - Detail views highlighting textures and form - Rendered visuals with dramatic lighting and backdrop

📌 Watch Band Series – Material Exploration Program: HKDI Watch Design Course | Year: 2012–2013
Brief Description: A series of watch band designs exploring materiality, tactility, and form. The focus was on innovating how users engage with timepieces through unexpected material combinations.
Design Challenge: Create watch bands that go beyond function and become an extension of personal style and user experience.
Design Solution: Each band explored a different material or design approach – including braided leather, translucent TPU, and modular magnetic links. Emphasis was placed on comfort, interchangeability, and aesthetic innovation.
My Role: Conducted material research and trend analysis Created mock-ups and prototypes of each band Designed a visual system for interchangeable functionality Presented the series as part of a concept showcase
Reflection: ✔ Gained hands-on understanding of wearable ergonomics and material behavior ❗ Could have tested more extensively for long-term wear durability 🎓 Learned how different materials affect user interaction and product perception
Visuals: Flat-lay shots of different band styles Material swatches and process sketches Prototype close-ups showing functional design elements
